Dangerous Passage

THE SHRIEK OF ENGINES followed by an explosion jarred Jimmie Flint awake. He jumped out of the bed. Through the window of his rented room in a South Water Street boardinghouse he saw a horrific sight. A Douglas DC-3 airplane was descending into the Bay of Fundy off the coast of Lubec, Maine. The plane’s engines ablaze.

Flint dressed and ran downstairs. Everyone was on the street. Sirens wailed as fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances roared past.

Flint followed. At the dock, spotlights on the water illuminated the crew and passengers of the plane standing on the wing. Flames engulfed the engines. The acrid black smoke from the fire danced over the plane like the angel of death.

Flint noticed a small powerboat about to head out to help. He jumped in.

“Need a hand?” he said.

“Sure,” the driver said.

He was greeted with nods from the two other men already in the boat. He didn’t know their names but their faces were familiar. He’d seen them around town, mostly in the bars that serviced the fishermen and smokehouse and cannery workers of Lubec.

“What happened out there?” Flint said. He stood next to the driver, a local sailor named Tom Sturges. Sturges was a big man with thick ruddy features.

“Don’t know nothing other than what you can see,” Sturges said. He spat a wad of tobacco-streaked phlegm into the water. “Looks like some kind of engine failure. I was walking home when I heard the noise in the sky. I looked up to see the plane drop like a shot down rocket ship from one of those Flash Gordon movie serials. It’s a bloody miracle it didn’t crash into the middle of town.”

Sturges put the boat in gear. The engine coughed and gurgled then settled into a growling drone. He piloted the craft towards the crash site. The plane was bobbing in the bay. As the boat closed in on the DC-3, there was another explosion in one of its engines. It rocked the plane, almost raising the nose out of the water.

Other rescue boats, some with lights illuminating the scene, had already picked up most of the crew and a handful of passengers. There were just three people left huddled on the wing. The plane was a commercial craft belonging to National East Coast Airlines.

As Sturges guided the boat near the ship, the stranded men jumped into the water. Flint and the others helped them into the powerboat.

There was another explosion. This one came from inside the fuselage. The water shuddered and rose. The powerboat almost capsized.

“Are they all in?” Sturges said. “We’ve got to get the hell away from here.”

“We’re all set,” Flint said. “Let’s go.”

Sturges gunned the engine, turned the wheel, and aimed the boat back at the dock. Behind them, a man screamed. It was a shriek of terror and pain.

Everyone turned back to look and what they saw horrified them. A lone passenger emerged from inside the plane and staggered out onto the wing. He was engulfed in flames.
